Craig Carlson is knocking on wood, but he’s very optimistic that the levy to fund the maintenance and operation of the Vanderzicht Memorial Pool will pass.

Carlson, director of North Whidbey Park and Recreation, said he was worried when he saw early results, but was relieved when the final results of the night were posted on the Island County Auditor’s Web site.

The levy, which requires 60 percent approval to pass, received 3,803 votes in support and 2,297 votes against. That’s a 62.34 percent approval rating.

“I screamed pretty loud,” he said. “I’m very happy.”

The levy would replace one that’s expiring. It would raise property tax rates by 18 cents or less per $1,000 of assessed value.

Yet vote counting in the county’s mail-in primary won’t be complete for days.

In other races, the four-way race for position 2 on the Coupeville School Board is a close one.

Cindy Van Dyk has 684 votes, Mitchell Howard has 498, Mark Varljen has 437 and Larrie Ford has 345 votes. If the trend holds, Van Dyk and Howard will move on to November’s general election ballot.

The race for position 4 on the Oak Harbor School District isn’t so tight. Corey Johnson has 4,001 votes, Brien Lillquist has 1,148 and Ace James III has 326.

In the race for Admirals Cove Water District commissioner, Kathleen Jones is leading with 67 votes, Chad Nichols has 57 and Reid Greenwood has 36.
