The Coupeville boys basketball team, loaded with depth and experience, cruised to a 77-49 victory over the Overlake Owls Friday night.
Head coach Randy King was pleased with the victory and pleased that 10 of Coupeville’s 12 varsity players scored in the contest.
“Your never completely satisfied, but it’s a neat thing when you get 10 kids scoring and everyone contributing,” he said about the victory. “It’s supposed to be fun and when everyone plays well it is fun.”
Much like their game the previous week against Granite Falls when the Wolves jumped out to a 16-1 first quarter lead, Coupeville used another impressive opening quarter to set the tone for the contest. The team took a 22-9 over the Owls in the first quarter and led 40-13 at the half. Overlake, a private school out of Redmond, never had a chance against the veteran Wolves whose varsity consists of nine seniors and three juniors.
“We played well, we executed on offense,” said King. They came out and tried to press us, we handled that well. They’re a young team, they’ve got a new coach that is just getting started with them. They’re just starting to build a program, but they’re working on it.”
Senior Brian Roundy stepped up for the Wolves in a big way. The 6-foot-6 Roundy took over for fellow senior Chris Good after Good suffered an injured leg early in the game. Roundy, who had a three-inch size advantage on the tallest Overlake player, finished the contest with a team-high 14 points. Roundy missed the Wolves’ first game due to injury and failed to score in his first contest back last Tuesday, but he came up big in Friday night’s rout.
“Brian’s a good shooter. For a big guy he has a nice touch around the basket,” said King. “He knows what to do with the ball when he gets it down low. He just gives us one more player we can use in the post.”
Good, who has been Coupeville’s key player down low since the start of the season, injured a quadriceps early in the game. He scored five points before coming out of the game. His status is uncertain for this week’s slate of games.
Senior Geoff Hageman joined Roundy in double-figure scoring with 11 points.
With Coupeville off to a 2-1 start, King is satisfied with how the season has began.
“The kids seem to be having fun and things are going well,” he said. “We haven’t got the injury bug that badly or the flu bug yet.”
Coupeville suffered its first loss of the season earlier in the week at Seattle Christian. Despite the loss 67-54 defeat, King was pleased with how his charges played against the two-time state finalists.
“We played them well, they only got away from us for one quarter,” King said. “Tough competition only helps us improve. They came into the game ranked fourth in the coaches’ poll and we were ninth and after the game their coach told me he was going to move us up.”
The Wolves have a pair of widely varied non-conference tilts this week. The team met Mount Vernon Christian last night and then travels to Sequim on Friday. Mount Vernon is a B school while Sequim is a much larger 3A squad. Despite the size discrepancies King is expecting two hard-fought games.
“We played Mount Vernon Christian in the summer – they have a pretty successful program that is running right along. I expect a good challenge even though they are a B school.”
King described Sequim as “a biggy, they beat us three straight times and we want to go over there and get them once. We’ve played them a lot in the summer and we know their players and coaches so that’s always fun.”
