Coupeville High School’s 4-0 loss in soccer to visiting Klahowya Monday, Oct. 27, included a bad news/good news scenario, according to coach Troy Cowan.
The bad news: The Eagles, with a strong wind at their back, bunched all four goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half.
The good news: Coupeville shut out fifth-ranked Klahowya (5-0, 13-1) in the second half.
The second half was “a much different affair,” Cowan said.
After the break, the Wolves created multiple scoring chances with Marisa Etzell firing shots or crosses, Cowan said.
On defense, keeper Julia Myers and the defense received a pep talk and some tips from coach Gary Manker and blanked the Eagles over the final 40 minutes.
Coupeville honored its seniors before the match.
“The girls have done a great job of believing in themselves and taking this program to uncharted territories,” Cowan said. “They are true pioneers and they aren’t finished yet.”
Cowan praised youth coaches Sean LeVine, Scott Rosenkranz and Ryan Baker for helping develop the talents of the seniors and other high school players.
“The real work is done by their select coaches,” Cowan said. “Big shout out to the Islander coaches that have put in 9-10 months out of the year for several years to help our young soccer players become the best they can be.”
The Wolves (2-2, 5-5) wrap up the regular season with two 5 p.m. matches with Port Townsend (1-3, 2-10) this week. A win in either will lock up a playoff spot.
Coupeville goes to Port Townsend Tuesday, Oct. 28, and hosts the Redhawks Thursday, Oct. 30.
