McTeachers raise money for schools

Middle school students in Oak Harbor noticed some familiar faces working at McDonald’s this week.

Teachers from both middle schools were frying burgers and passing out fries as a fund-raiser benefiting student programs.

Teachers participated in the restaurant’s “McTeachers” program and took turns working two-and-a-half hour shifts. North Whidbey Middle School teachers worked Tuesday evening while Oak Harbor Middle School teachers worked Thursday evening.

“We just believe in helping the school and we believe in education,” said owner Barb Johnson.

Teachers were preparing food, manning the registers and cleaning tables during the fund-raiser.

“Kids love coming in and watch their teachers serve them,” said Oak Harbor Middle School Principal Peggy Ellis.

North Whidbey Middle School raised $956 while Oak Harbor Middle School raised $1,156. The money comes from a percentage of food sales, coupon book sales and a $100 corporate donation for each school.

“The money goes to support a project that will support the whole school,” Ellis said.

Last year, the money helped provide scholarships for sixth graders who needed financial assistance for the yearly trek to Camp Moran. It also paid for a washer and dryer.

Ellis said teachers will meet soon to decide how to use this year’s money.

At North Whidbey Middle School, money raised goes into the ASB fund which helps boost a variety of student programs.

“What we typically do is put money in the ASB account so it supports student activities of all types,” said North Whidbey Middle School Principal Doug Kyles.

Kyles said the money has gone to specific programs in the past that probably wouldn’t exist without the support. Last year’s money boosted the drama club and the cross country program.
