Snohomish wins big over Oak Harbor

UW-bound Brockman scores 21 in limited minutes

On the bright side, Oak Harbor has held one of the state’s best players, Jon Brockman, to season-low point totals of 21 in two meetings this year.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats that hasn’t translated to wins against Snohomish — most recently resulting in a 66-39 home loss to the Panthers on Friday night.

“This was almost a carbon copy of our first meeting with these guys,” OHHS head coach Bryan Schulle said.

Brockman, a 6-foot-8 senior, who recently signed with to play for the University of Washington, scored 13 of his game-high 21 points during the first quarter. All of those points came from within five feet of the basket, as the Wildcats had a hard time finding an answer.

“He’s tall, he’s quick, he’s strong and he’s pretty athletic,” Oak Harbor’s 6-foot-4 Will Hunter said. “I was just trying to be physical with him.”

For the most part, Hunter and fellow 6-foot-4 post Bryce Waller, did effective jobs of forcing Brockman into difficult shots. Brockman’s athletic ability, however, allowed those shots to drop.

“He just goes through you like you’re not there,” Schulle said.

As much as Brockman helped the Panthers in the opening period, the Wildcats hurt themselves.

After taking a 2-1 lead on a layup from Waller with 7:31 to go in the first, OHHS went frigid. The Wildcats missed eight ensuing buckets, many of which were open looks, and fell behind 19-5 after one quarter.

“Something happened, they just didn’t fall early,” Schulle said.

Snohomish on the other hand, wasn’t missing. The Panthers hit 16-of-25 (64 percent) shots in the first half for a 35-16 lead.

Oak Harbor continued to struggle in the third quarter, taking just eight shots and committing seven turnovers.

Snohomish kept up its intensity all the way through, taking its largest lead with 5:20 left in the game, 61-29, on a jump shot from freshman Zach Wilde.

Brockman, who drew a line of at least 20 autograph-seeking kids after the game, was held below his 30 point average sitting out all but four minutes of the second half. His most exciting shot of the night, however, didn’t count. Just after the halftime buzzer sounded, Brockman banked in a one-handed heave from mid-court that was waved off by the referees.

Waller led OHHS with nine points, followed by sophomore James Leach with eight.

Friday’s loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-13 this season with six games left to play.

“It’s tough, you want to win, but as long as the guys are learning and getting better that’s all you can do,” Waller said.

Oak Harbor faced Monroe (4-7, 7-8) last night at home in hopes of getting their first victory.

“I think we can get them,” Waller said.
