The stands were packed to capacity as the fans erupted with cheers as the Oak Harbor wrestling team stormed out of the mat room Tuesday evening.With some really close matches and a main event that featured two state wrestlers – Brent Lang from Oak Harbor and Cecilio Martinez for Mariner – the Wildcats dominated the Mariner Marauders (0-2) for their second victory of the season in as many meets, 48-15.The key for tonight was all the pins and the younger guys who kept from getting pinned, said Brent Lang.By the time Lang’s match rolled around his team was well ahead of the Marauders. But this match was not about the team score so much, as it pit two of the best from last season’s state tournament against one another.Cecilio Martinez is an outstanding wrestler but Brent Lang is one phenomenon of a wrestler, said head coach Brian Farmer. As good as Martinez is, there is no stopping Brent.I didn’t do anything fancy, said Lang. I just wrestled the basics. He did really do much except for stalling. Lang dominated the match, scoring consistently in every round and beat Martinez 9-2. Lang was close to a pin during the early moments of the third round but Martinez was able to roll out of it, to the crowd’s loud dismay. The end of the match was a bit controversial as Lang was called for stalling, giving Martinez a point and making it more difficult for Lang to grab any more than three points for his team’s score.I don’t think I should have gotten that stalling call, said Lang. You can’t do a whole lot against a good wrestler like that and he wasn’t trying to stand up or anything.The team score was close through the first six matches of the night, 14-2 in the Cats favor. But when it came around to Danny Wichers’ match the night turned Oak Harbor’s way. After getting a near fall in the first round and earning a five point lead, Wichers wore down his opponent in the second, garnering another near fall and reeling off nine straight points. During the round Wichers was so close to pinning his opponent that the unusually quiet coaches jumped to their feet and started screaming to Wichers to pin him. During the third round he would. With his opponent down on his face, Wichers rolled him to his back and cradled him up just long enough to get the pin with only 1:27 left in the match.The victory was the start of a 34-3 domination by Oak Harbor, during which they would receive four of their five pins on the night. One of the best matches of the night narrowly went Mariner’s way as both wrestlers fought and grinded through a close match. Oak Harbor’s Ezreal Comicho jumped all over his opponent in the first round, scoring two quick points for a takedown by grabbing his legs and driving him to the mat. Comicho narowly missed gaining a pin towards the end of the round but his opponent tied the match at seven in the second round. I am pretty good at the beginning but I can get pretty tired at the end and it’s kind of hard to deal with that, said Comicho.With the crowd as loud as it was all evening, Comicho started the third round with a two-point takedown. But his opponent made two great spin moves in the closing seconds to take three points for his team in the decision.I just got really tired I guess, said Comicho. I thought I had him at the end but I didn’t get to the back like I wanted to. Comicho added that he thinks that the mental preparation helped his team overall for the meet. Ezreal has done some great stuff, said Farmer. I told him you have to learn to walk before you can run and all he needs is some confidence. I was pleased with it, along with Jake Horn.Jake Horn lost close a decision, 12-9, on a near fall during the third round. I should have beat him, said Horn. I couldn’t really hold on to him, it was so sweaty and I didn’t think about my moves. Like in the Cats first meet the lighter divisions didn’t fare as well as the heavier ones. Rory Magana at 103 pounds was defeated in much the same fashion as he was in the first meet, as he fell prey to a pin with 1:17 left in the first round. Steve Lemme, at 125 pounds, lost after a grueling match that was tied 8-8 entering the third round. The match was Lemme’s first at the varsity level. The losses we had could have gone either way so I was real pleased, said Farmer. Kevin Lang won by major decision and Jon Garcia pinned his opponent with just 1:07 remaining in the first round of the match. Other pins on the night for Oak Harbor went to Sean Hogan for the second week in a row at 275 pounds, Brian Lang at 1:26 in the first round and David Kazman, whose opponent couldn’t hold him off for .2 seconds longer in the first round in order to escape by use of the clock.I was real proud of Dave Kazman, said Farmer. We really needed that win there and it allowed (Chris) Whiteman and Hogan to wrestle and not be concerned with the score.With his head coach pacing behind the bench, Chris Whiteman earned a major decision at 215 pounds. The team traveled to take on Shorewood on Thursday evening where they dominated their opponents, 61-12. Thanks to six first-round pins Oak Harbor improved their record to 3-0. The team is presently at Lake Washington for a tournament today (Saturday). Oak Harbor took second in the tourney last year and the coach says they want first this time.
