Using a long-ball attack, the Arlington High School girls basketball team slid by host Oak Harbor 48-34 Friday, Jan. 20.
The Eagles sank more three-point field goals than two-pointers (eight to six) to deny the Wildcats their first conference win of the season.
The game was tight until midway through the third quarter when Arlington went on a 17-3 run to pull away. The Eagle surge was fueled by four shots from outside the arc and a three-point play.
“We played well tonight,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said. “We play in the toughest league, so we just need to keep fighting. We want to win, but we did play well.”
The Wildcats are now 0-8 in the Western Conference and 3-13 overall.
Oak Harbor hosts Marysville Getchell (5-2, 10-5) at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan.25, then the schedule gets easier. The Wildcats final three games are against teams with a combined 2-20 conference record.
A long hoop by Bryn Langrock and bucket by Rashanna Graham staked Oak Harbor a 5-0 lead in Friday’s loss to Arlington (4-3, 5-10). The pair added similar baskets later in the period, and the Wildcats finished the first quarter ahead 10-8.
Peyton Brown knocked down a three-pointer for Arlington at the beginning of the second quarter to give the Eagles lead, one they would never relinquish.
Graham and Julie Jansen each hit two free throws in the second quarter for Oak Harbor’s only points in the period, and the Wildcats trailed 19-14 at the half.
Oak Harbor tied the game with the first two scores after halftime. Mikhaela Cortez dropped in a field goal off an offense rebound and Langrock sank a three-ball, and it was 19-19.
Arlington then went on its 17-3 run. Four different Eagles hit three-pointers while Oak Harbor got good looks but couldn’t connect.
The Eagles finished the period with a 37-24 lead. Oak Harbor could get no closer than 11 the rest of the way.
For the game, Langrock had five three-pointers and 17 points. Graham finished with 9 points, Jansen 6 and Cortez 2.
Brown scored 13 to pace the Eagles.
“We ran our offense well,” Atkins said, “but we couldn’t get anything to go down.
“Julie and Rashanna really stepped up, and Mikhaela stayed on the boards, as she has all year. She’s playing well for a freshman.”
