WhidbeyHealth can thank an observant bank employee on the East Coast for stopping an attempt to get a bogus $28,000 check cashed that appeared to be authorized by the health organization.
Chief Financial Officer Ron Telles told the tale of the foiled fake check during Monday’s monthly meeting of the Whidbey Island Public Health District.
“We got a call from a bank on the East Coast that had a check from us for $28,000,” Wallin said. “He said, ‘it looks suspicious.’ It was the stock of the paper that didn’t feel right to him.”
Telles said Coupeville was spelled incorrectly on the check but other than that “it looked spectacular.”
The FBI is investigating, Telles said.
