After winning the first set, the Coupeville High School volleyball couldn’t keep the momentum and lost 3-1 to visiting Mount Vernon Christian Thursday, Sept. 25.

The Hurricanes pulled out the win 21-25, 25-9, 25-10, 25-19.

The two teams were tied 20-20 in the first set, then the Wolves finished strong for the 25-21 win.

That burst at the end quickly disappeared as Mount Vernon Christian (4-1) jumped to a 7-0 lead in game two and cruised to the win.

Game three followed a similar pattern as the Hurricane raced to 7-1 and 10-2 leads.

In the fourth set, Coupeville finally matched its first-set effort. Trailing by several points during the first half of the game, the Wolves battled back to a 17-17 tie. MVC scored six straight to hold off the Coupeville charge.

“Mount Vernon Christian really picked up the speed of its offense after the first set,” coach Breanne Smedley said. “We didn’t see much of that in the first game.”

“In the first game we did a good job of controlling the ball and playing at our pace,” she added.

After that, the Wolves put together several  “good strings,” Smedley said, “but we couldn’t string enough of those together to get momentum.”

Smedley started two freshman and a sophomore and tried a new configuration of players.

“We are working through that,” she said.

Hailey Hammer recorded nine kills with only one hitting error.

Madeline Strasburg added three kills, four aces and 11 digs;  MaKenzie Bailey had three kills; Valen Trujillo had 13 digs; and Lauren Rose had four digs and 15 assists.

Coupeville (0-4) wraps up the non-league portion of its schedule when it hosts Bellevue Christian (4-1) at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7.
