From geraniums to to-mato plants, the Coupeville Garden Club has a reputation for growing some handsome plants.

This becomes evident every spring when the club holds its annual plant sale at the Coupeville Recreation Hall — and customers begin arriving early to claim a spot in line.

“They’re lining up into the parking lot,” club member Susan Myers said.

The much anticipated sale, the club’s biggest fundraiser, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29.

The sale is a product of labor that started in February inside greenhouses next to Coupeville High School.

Starting from seeds or young starts, traditionally more than a thousand plants are tended to maturity for the special day.

Tomato plants and geraniums are the biggest draw and are in most abundance. The club focus es mostly on annuals for the sale but has grown a variety of perennials as well from bleeding hearts to columbine.

Myers pointed to the wave petunias that are popular for hanging baskets.

“They don’t get as leggy as the others,” she said.

Proceeds from the event are used to support the educational and beautification projects of the club, which is a caretaker for numerous landscaping sites around the Town of Coupeville as well as the flower barrels around town.

Those who purchase a $1 raffle ticket also are eligible for prizes.
