Coupeville High School seniors Joey Lippo and William Nelson completed their climb to the top spot in Olympic League tennis by winning the doubles title in the conference tournament at Chimacum High School Monday, Oct. 23.
The first four finishers in singles and doubles qualified for the district tournament which will be Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 25 and 26, at the Sprinker Tennis Center in Tacoma.
Lippo and Nelson will be joined at district by four Coupeville teammates who also placed in the top four Monday.
The first and second place finishers at district earn state berths.
Lippo and Nelson did not place at the league tournament as freshmen, took third as sophomores and second as juniors. This year they did not lose a set while claiming the top spot.
Now the pair needs to jump up a step at district. Last fall they finished third, one place out of qualifying for the state tournament.
Other Coupeville qualifiers for district are senior Nick Etzell and sophomore Mason Grove, who placed third in doubles, and Pedro Gamarra and Jakobi Baumann, who captured third and fourth in singles.
