The Sultan High School boys basketball team used an 11-0 run late in the game to slip by visiting Coupeville 54-49 in a non-league contest Saturday, Jan. 13.
The Wolves (2-1, 4-9) now turn their attention to conference play. Coupeville goes to Klahowya (2-1, 6-7) twice this week, first at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, and then at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. Chimacum (0-5, 0-9) comes to town at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19.
Coupeville led most of Sultan contest, going up 30-21 in the third quarter, then the Turks heated up.
Sultan (3-11) hit three three-point shots and nine of 11 free throws in the third quarter, Coupeville went cold from the field, and the Turks led 36-34 going into the final period.
The Wolves couldn’t make a field goal — they went nearly a quarter and a half without one — but they did sink 10 consecutive foul shots to lead 44-42 with two and a half minutes remaining.
Sultan then scored 11 straight points to put the game away.
Hunter Smith scored 18 points for the Wolves, and Ethan Spark, who made three three-pointers and all six of his free throws, finished with 15.
Joey Lippo scored 6 points, Cameron Toomey-Stout 5, Hunter Downes 4 and Dane Lucero 1.
Lippo also had 10 rebounds, two steals and a block; Downes grabbed eight boards and two steals.
Sultan also won the junior varsity game, 72-52. Mason Grove hit eight three-pointers and scored 32 points for the Wolves. Coupeville won the C game 42-39 behind 17 points and five rebounds from Sage Downes.
