Five returning division champions will set the pace for the Oak Harbor High School boys track team as it heads into the 2018 season.

Back for the Wildcats is two-time 400-meter Wesco North champion senior Mac Nuanez, 100-meter winner senior Taeson Hardin and high jump champ senior Ozell Jackson.

Nuanez and Jackson also ran on the winning 4×400 relay team, while Hardin was joined on the first-place 4×100 team by senior Andrew Miller and his junior brother Dorian Hardin.

The 4×100 team went on to place eighth in the state meet, and the 4×400 squad took 11th.

Taeson Hardin finished 14th in the state 100, and Jackson was 14th in the high jump.

Other returning lettermen for Oak Harbor are seniors Ben Gasper, Isaac Gomez, Kyle Nickols and Weston Whitefoot; juniors Keegan Daniels, Brandon McCollough and Josh Stone; and sophomores Justin Campbell, Gabriel Daggett, Dallas Riddle-Stevens and Tyrell Torres.

Head coach Jay Turner said it is too early in the year to identify which new comers will have the greatest impact.

“We do have a lot of new faces, but it will be tough to see where they will all fit in until we get a few weeks into the season,” he said.

The Wildcats will be strongest in the sprints, jumps and throws, according to Turner, but will “need to find some depth as we did graduate quite a few athletes last year.”

Oak Harbor, which placed second in the Wesco North in 2017, hosts the Island Jamboree at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15. The first regular meet is set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, when Oak Harbor meets Getchell and Meadowdale at Marysville-Pilchuck.
