The Coupeville High School tennis team won its second straight match, stopping host Chimacum 5-2 Thursday, Oct. 2.

Because the ferry was behind schedule, the contest started late and three of the seven varsity matches had to be shortened so the Wolves could catch the last returning ferry.

Coupeville (2-4) was dominate in most of its wins over Chimacum (1-4), which included one Port Townsend player, and the two matches the Wolves lost were narrow defeats.

The Wolves swept the three singles matches, getting wins from  Aaron Curtin (6-3, 6-3), Sebastian Davis (6-1, 6-2) and Kyle Bodamer (6-1, 6-1).

“Sebastian and Kyle were on and off the court in short order, while Aaron faced a pesky defensive tennis player in the top slot,” coach Ken Stange said. “Aaron’s opponent just wouldn’t go away. He kept chasing down Aaron’s big shots, but Aaron was able to consistently outlast the top Cowboy.”

The Wolves also won in second doubles (William Nelson/Joey Lippo, 6-2, 8-6) and fourth doubles (Connor McCormick/Jimmy Myers, 6-3, 10-8).

Joseph Wedekind and John McClarin fell in first doubles 6-1, 7-5.

Grey Rische and Jared Helmstadter won the first set 6-3 in third doubles before losing 10-4, 9-8.

After the first set of second through fourth doubles, the matches switched to a tiebreaker format to speed up play.

The duos of Nelson/Lippo and McCormick/Myers both came from behind in the second set to wrap up their wins.

“William and Joey continued a solid rookie run,” Stange said.

He added that McCormick and Myers’ win was “tense” and a “fast and furious finish to the day.”

Coupeville also won the only JV match played. Brian Shank and Aiden Crimmins won 7-5 over a team which included one of the Cowboys’ first doubles players.

“I was proud of their effort and hustle,” Stange said. “Brian was forceful with his racket. Aiden took the opposite approach, playing soft and smooth. Both were effective and they came out on top.”

Coupeville’s next match is also with Chimacum, hosting the Cowboys at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.
