William Lloyd Spaur was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Oak Park, Ill. to Lloyd and Margaret (Rath) Spaur. Bill passed away at his home in Oak Harbor on May 22.
Bill’s family moved from Illinois to southern Iowa in 1927.
Bill graduated from Albia High School in 1942. He joined the U.S. Marines Corps immediately after his 18th birthday and served until June 1946. He married Phyllis Oden on Nov. 29, 1953. They have two children, son Charles and daughter Peggy. Bill and Phyllis farmed in southern Iowa for 44 years. Bill was a past president of the Monroe County Cattleman’s Association and a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Albia, Iowa. The Spaurs moved to Whidbey Island in 1997.
During his retirement years, Bill enjoyed wood crafting and selling his creations at farmers markets and playing dominos with a very special circle of friends. Bill was a member of the Oak Harbor Southern Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosemary Dittmer and two brothers, Robert Spaur and Howard Spaur.
Bill is survived by his wife Phyllis of Oak Harbor; son Charles (Brenda) Spaur of Aurora, Colo. and daughter Peggy (Jay) Shannon of Oak Harbor; three grandchildren, Cory Shannon, and Katelyn and Billy Spaur; a brother, Carl Spaur of Albia, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday June 2, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Harbor Southern Baptist Church. Burial in Liberty Cemetery, Bussey, Iowa at a later date.
