Over a century old and a central Whidbey landmark, the Captain Whidbey Inn is far from gathering dust in old age. The inn is bustling with activity and public interest.

Two events are coming up: an oral history project called “Rural Recollections” and a community open house.

The Island County Historical Society and the Trust Board of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve are presenting “Rural Recollections, Captain Whidbey Inn — A New Chapter” 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26 at the Coupeville Recreation Hall.

The audience will be the main speakers and the inn’s new owners, Eric Cheong, Matt French and Mike French, will be the listeners. At this program, the audience will share stories and memories of the Inn and have a chance to meet the owners.

Attendees should bring a sweet treat for the dessert potluck along with any stories to share. Beverages will be provided.

The Rural Recollections program is designed to bring history from black and white into “living color,” said Island County Museum Executive Director Rick Castellano.

He said he’s expecting around 120 people to show up. People have had weddings and Christmas parties at the inn over the years, Castellano said.

“It will be a piece of history for sure … It’s a fun way to learn about your community,” he said.

“You never know what stories will come out.”

The public is also invited to an open house at the Captain Whidbey Inn 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 28. The inn’s owners are inviting the community to join them at the tavern and patio for beer, wine and appetizers.
