A late rally wasn’t enough and the Coupeville Babe Ruth baseball team fell 9-5 to Calgary, Alberta, in the opening game of the regional 15U tournament Monday, July 23, in Portland.
The Wolves will continue pool play when they face host Portland at 4 p.m. Tuesday at David Douglas High School.
Down 7-0, Coupeville exploded for five runs in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.
Calgary broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning, then tacked on five more in the fifth.
The Wolves were hitless until Johnny Carlson stroked a single in the top of the fifth.
In the sixth, Coupeville finally got untracked and back into the game with five runs.
Hits by Hawthorne Wolfe, Andrew Score and Sage Sharp; walks to Daniel Olson, Gavin Knoblich, Carlson and Xavier Murdy and an error fueled the rally.
Calgary countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then blanked Coupeville in the seventh to secure the win.
