During the 2018 Whidbey Island Area Fair, the costumed entertainer from When You Wish Productions coached children, alongside Cinderella, Jasmine and Moana. Adults and children alike made “critters” out of fruits and vegetables, which where then proudly displayed on shelves for fair-goers to view.
More than 200 edible creations were featured.
Deer Lagoon Grange hosted the spontaneous event, which made use of produce donated by Saar’s Market in Oak Harbor, Clinton Foodmart, The Goose at Bayview, The Star Store of Langley and Good Cheer Food Bank.
Representatives from South Whidbey Tilth and the Deer Lagoon Grange educated the children about fruits, honey, compost, herbs and vegetables.
The Deer Lagoon Grange also created an educational display featuring fruits and vegetables that are locally grown in Washington state.
Waste not, want not — all the leftover produce from the fun project was carefully sorted and distributed to Good Cheer Food Bank and to South Whidbey School Farms for their students’ and faculty’s composting project.
