Wolves among leaders at South Whidbey tournament / Volleyball

The Coupeville High School volleyball team posted one of the best records among the eight teams at the South Whidbey Invitational Saturday, Sept. 8.

The Wolves played each team in two sets to 25 and finished with an 11-3 record.

The highlights included splitting with powerful South Whidbey and 2A North Mason.

Coach Cory Whitmore was pleased with his team’s effort against the Falcons: “I was very excited to see us step out on the court and play with confidence and tenacity. They came back and took the second set, as we let their strong attack affect our game-plan too much, but like with every game, we had great lessons from which to build. “

In addition to rolling up an 11-3 record, the Wolves finished with a positive 77-point differential over the 14 sets.

“I truly felt with each passing game, we became more and more cohesive as a unit, had a new lesson to face and, with it, gained the experience that will help to take us through competitive play in league and into playoffs,” Whitmore said.

“Each player had some great moments throughout the day, and playing 14 sets in a day with eight players is challenge, mentally and physically. I’m very proud about how this team played strong even toward the end of the Invite.”

Coupeville (1-0) plays Anacortes at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11.
