Coupeville Town Council approved an interlocal agreement with the Island County Sheriff’s Office last week for law enforcement services.

The contract starts March 1.

A motion to approve the agreement was passed by all council members with the exception of Molly Hughes, who was absent from the meeting.

“We don’t take this decision lightly,” said Councilman Bob Clay.

With the scale of economy and how small the town is, he said the move makes sense.

“We cannot provide a level of service our community expects and deserves,” he said.

The current Coupeville Marshal’s Office will be disbanded. Deputies may apply with the sheriff’s office for the future Coupeville positions.

Mayor Nancy Conard said two of the town’s reserve officers have taken jobs with other agencies, which currently leaves the marshal’s office understaffed.

Conard said it was understandable, however, since the town has been exploring options for police services.

The county deputies will maintain a local feel, wearing Coupeville uniforms, drive Coupeville vehicles and use a Coupeville office at town hall. Right now the town provides 24/7 response coverage, not 24/7 patrol coverage.

Conard said there really wouldn’t be a difference in coverage from what residents get now compared to what the sheriff’s office would provide. When a deputy is not on duty, a deputy assigned to the north precinct of the sheriff’s office will respond to calls during off hours.
