Continuing the town’s long-standing tradition of commemorating Veterans Day, Coupeville will once again host the annual Coupeville Remembrance Ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.
It will be at the Veteran’s Memorial at the Island County Courthouse, located on the corner of 6th and Center streets.
The event is organized by the Central Whidbey Lions Club and sponsored by the town and the musical group the Shifty Sailors.
Veterans representing all branches of the Armed Services will post their respective flags and the Shifty Sailors will sing the hymn from each branch.
Coupeville Mayor Molly Hughes will give a speech on the significance of Veterans Day.
Shifty Sailors member and director Vern Olsen served in the Army for three years. He said he is pleased that all the service branches will be well-represented in the ceremony.
“It’s a service that honors all people that served,” he said.
The Shifty Sailors will sing the song for each branch as its flag is raised.
“It’s an awesome ceremony,” said Coupeville Lion Deanna Rogers. “It’s a really a nice ceremony for veterans.”
Judy Lewis, past-president of the Central Whidbey Lions Club, said she’s looking forward to this year’s event.
Flag presenters during Sunday’s ceremony will include Derek Mobley with the Air Force flag, Dean McKinney with the Navy flag, Scott Darnell with the Marine flag and Bill Frost with the Coast Guard, she said.
