Jim passed away in Coupeville after a brave fight with prostate cancer.
He was born in Butte, Mont., to Dr. James L McCarthy and Margaret Sullivan.
Dr. McCarthy died in 1936 and Margaret later married Daniel Sullivan, who lived as a boy on Whidbey Island. Jim would be raised in Butte; Charlestown, S.C.; Los Angeles; Denver; Beirut; and Saudi Arabia. He attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1956.
That year, he married Barbara DuBois and joined the Marines. He served in Quantico, Va., and completed his term of service as a radar officer at New River Air Facility, N.C.
He entered civilian life and had a long successful career in the petrochemical industry as a sales and marketing executive.
Jim and Barbara would retire to Whidbey Island after raising seven children: James Jr., Daniel (deceased), Maura, Mic-hael, Brian (deceased), Sheila and Conor.
He is survived by Barbara; two sisters, Peg and Danee; 10 grandchildren; Jim Billeaux; and three great-grandchildren.
Jim was a member of The Knights of Columbus, loved sailing, travel and walking Ebey’s Prairie. A funeral mass was held Nov. 29, 2018 at St. Mary Church, Coupeville.
He was buried at Sunnyside Cemetery.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to the end. Generous and loving with a quick intelligent wit and sense of humor. His family and friends miss him so much.
