All but one starter returns for the Oak Harbor High School girls golf team as the Wildcats aim to improve on last year’s fifth-place finish in the Wesco North.

Although the team has plenty of varsity experience, it is still young. Jenna Flores is the lone senior among the returning players.

Also back are juniors Natasha Decker, Danalin Matro, Hannah Rogers and Mckenna Ronning, and sophomore Jessica Aguilar.

A key newcomer, according to coach Andy Wesley, is freshman Sarah Rhodes.

Rhodes “put in a lot of time over the summer and fall that will contribute to the team’s success,” Wesley said.

The returning group is the team’s strength, according to Wesley. Its weakness, he said, is that Oak Harbor does not have a golfer who can post a “really low” score at this point, like some of the other conference schools.

Wesley’s goal for the season is to produce a team that can compete in the Wesco North while having fun and “getting better at a wonderful sport.”

Some of the players “have their eyes on qualifying for the state tournament,” while others are looking to make the second round of district, Wesley said.

The season will be a success, he added, if the Wildcats can qualify six players for district and finish among the top teams in the conference.

Oak Harbor heads to Sedro-Woolley for a jamboree at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, and then hosts the annual Whidbey Shootout at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19.
