The new Oak Harbor Wrestling Club began its season at the Hawkeye Open Tournament in Anacortes last weekend, Nov. 9 and 10.

Oak Harbor represented one of the largest clubs in the meet with 29 athletes, according to club president Peter Esvelt; most of the Kraken, however, are new to the sport. Five chose to compete in the open division which includes the most experienced wrestlers. The other 24 took part in the novice tournament.

“We had a lot more new wrestlers in the tournament than other schools, some as young as 5,” Esvelt said. “They worked really hard, wrestled really tough, and all of them hit the moves we have worked on in the mat room over this last month.”

Leyton Anderson and Zoe Beeman each finished first to lead the Oak Harbor squad.

Finn Marsh, Colton Sanders, William Bailey, Emmett Marsh, Izayuh Harrison, David Scheer and Joel Christopherson all won two matches over the weekend.

Next is a trip to Arlington Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16 and 17.
