A new coach will be patrolling the sidelines for the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team this season.

Anacortes native Nate Sullivan takes over for John Weston, who resigned after last season after five years at the helm.

Sullivan spent the past 11 seasons as an assistant to Anacortes head coach Brett Senff and was voted the Northwest Conference Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015.

“The days coaching in Anacortes are some of the best days of my life,” Sullivan said. “I am forever grateful to coach Senff and the Anacortes community for the opportunity and support.”

Sullivan graduated from Anacortes High School in 1996 and then attended Whatcom Community College before forging a career as a Puget Sound Dungeness crab fisherman.

Growing up he played basketball, baseball, tennis and soccer. At Anacortes High School he was a two-year varsity basketball letterman and team captain. He earned first-team, all-league honors in tennis as a senior.

Sullivan wants his Oak Harbor players, after going through his program, “to take with them a very strong sense of pride for their community — to always work hard while representing their families, teammates and community.”

He will stress a strong, hard-working team environment in Oak Harbor.

“It is our goal to play solid team defense and rebound the basketball well,” he said.

Another goal is to be “the team that makes the most hustle plays every game.”

Oak Harbor opens the season when it hosts Coupeville at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4.
