A sailor was in a brief standoff with police in base housing this afternoon, the Navy reported.
Whidbey Island Naval Air Station released a statement that explained Navy officials cordoned off a residence in base housing at about 2 p.m. because of the threat made by the member of the Navy.
Base security Oak Harbor police officers and emergency response personnel responded and contained the scene. Residences in the nearby vicinity were evacuated and a child care facility was placed on lockdown out of a sense of extreme caution, the base reported.
The sailor surrendered at around 2:30 p.m.
“We do not discuss force protection measures, however we take all threats seriously,” the statement from the base said, “and are constantly vigilant and assessing conditions that relate to force protection at our installations. The safety of our military personnel and their families is our top priority.”
The incident is under investigation.
