A cascade of mistakes cost the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team in a 70-45 loss to visiting Edmonds-Woodway Friday, Jan. 3.
The Wildcats (0-3, 1-8) look to break their eight-game losing streak at Lynnwood (0-3, 1-8) at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Edmonds-Woodway, which failed to take advantage of Oak Harbor’s early miscues, pulled away from the Wildcats late in the first quarter.
Oak Harbor led 10-9 with 1:36 left in the opening frame despite 11 turnovers. The Wildcats also committed 10 fouls in the opening period and had four players on the bench with two each.
The Warriors finished the first period on an 8-0 run and never looked back, leading 15-10 and 38-25 at the end of the first two quarters.
E-W buried Oak Harbor by outscoring the Wildcats 29-11 in the third period to go up 67-36.
The Wildcats added their troubles by making only six of 21 free throws in the game.
“Our effort was good,” Oak Harbor coach Nate Sullivan said. “Unfortunately we beat ourselves with our mistakes.”
Sullivan praised the play of Matt Kelley, who stayed on the court the entire game and “made good decisions.”
Sullivan also lauded Kelley’s defensive work, limiting Edmonds-Woodway’s high-scoring Mutdung Bol to 11 points.
Will Rankin paced the Oak Harbor attack with 14 points. Kelley had 9, Kaito White 9, Garrett Levell 8, Brock Boyer 4 and Gage McLeod 1.
Nuer Bol topped the Warriors with 17 points.
