Holding South Whidbey to single digits in all four quarters, the Coupeville High School girls basketball team trimmed the rival Falcons 34-25 Friday, Jan. 17, in Langley.

“Our defense is our bread and butter,” Coupeville coach Scott Fox said. “The girls did an outstanding job getting deflections and steals.”

Defense, he added, “leads to offense.”

The defensive focus for the Wolves was shutting down the Falcons’ inside players.

“We tried to take their bigs away,” Fox said.

Led by Hannah Davidson, who Fox called “a warrior,” Coupeville limited South Whidbey’s top scorer, 6-1 freshman Isabelle Woods, to 8 points.

Coupeville’s Chelsea Prescott scored 5 points in the first quarter as the Wolves took a 10-8 lead.

Scout Smith sank two three-balls, Prescott added 4 points and Coupeville pushed its lead to 8, 20-12, at the break.

Smith hit two field goals, including another three-pointer, and Prescott chipped in with 4 points to help the Wolves go up 30-18 after three quarters.

Smith and Prescott each finished with 13 points.

“It was a great birthday present for Chelsea,” Fox said. “It was her best offensive attack of the season.”

Avalon Renninger had 4 points and Davidson and Maddie Georges 2 each for the Wolves.

Coupeville improved its record to 3-1 in league play and 8-3 overall. The Falcons fell to 2-4, 7-9.

The Wolves go to Granite Falls (0-4, 3-12) at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, in the second of five consecutive road games.
