Blankman tallies state-qualifying score / Swim and dive

Oak Harbor High School’s John Blankman earned a state qualifying score at the final district dive qualifying meet Saturday, Feb. 1.

Blankman finished seventh out of 23 divers at the meet, fourth among 3A competitors, with a score of 324.05. A score of 315 is required to qualify for state.

Oak Harbor’s Jordan Fay placed 11th with a 292.3.

Andrew Kallio of Marysville-Pilchuck finished first with a 442.55.

Oak Harbor dive coach Caitlin Dean said Blankman is an “amazing kid and hard worker, who always comes to practice with a great attitude.”

She noted that Blankman started the year with single dives and has progressed to more complex attempts.

Dean said Fay has a shot at earning a state qualifying mark at the district meet next week.

Blankman, Fay and Oak Harbor’s third diver Ralph Ramier are all sophomores and have fun working together, according to Dean.

“I am excited to see what they can do in the coming seasons,” she said.

Blackman, Fay and the Oak Harbor High School swimmers will compete in the district swim and dive championships Feb. 12, 14 and 15 at the Snohomish Aquatic Center.

Regardless of Blankman’s finish at the district finals, he will automatically advance to state because of his marks last Saturday.
