Maria Dailey and Aly Grose of the Oak Harbor High School girls wrestling team each placed fourth at the sub-regional tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8, at Bellingham’s Squalicum High School and earned berths in the regional meet.

The top four in each weight class earned regional berths.

Adelina Lopez placed fifth and is an alternate. However, coach Brian Farmer said there is a petition to have the fifth-place wrestler from the Bellingham sub-regional face the fourth-place finisher from the other sub-regional that is feeding the regional tournament because the Bellingham meet had many more participants. The winner would then earn a spot in the regional meet.

The regional is 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Sedro-Woolley High School. The top four in each weight class earn state berths.

The state meet, Mat Classic XXXII, is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and 22, at the Tacoma Dome.

Oak Harbor placed 17th out of 22 teams at the sub-regional, which included schools from all classifications, with 62 points. Burlington-Edison claimed the title with 245 points.

“I was very proud of our team,” Farmer said after the sub-regional tournament. “Throughout the season we kept improving and that was very evident as well during the sub-regional tournament. All but one girl won at least one match.”
