Island County commissioners have set in motion plans for a moratorium on new marijuana production and sales.
Commissioners were responding to a survey from the Washington State Liquor Control Board in reference to the law created by I-502, a measure approved by voters that allows the use of recreational marijuana.
A loud sound, described by many who heard it as a “boom,” occurred around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Crescent Harbor area.
The source of the noise remains undetermined.

Accusing the Navy of “backpedaling,” a Coupeville-based citizen’s group suing the Navy in federal court has begun the process of putting its lawsuit on hold.
The group filed suit against the Navy in July over jet noise at Outlying Field Coupeville, part of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. In its lawsuit, the group demanded an Environmental Impact Statement, or EIS, be launched by the Navy.
The Navy, which suspended operations at OLF until the end of the year, announced this month its intention to initiate an EIS.
Drivers across Whidbey Island may notice a spate of dips or bumps in county roads that seem to have appeared suddenly.
The road work is merely part of annual improvements that have been delayed due to rainfall.
The divots or bumps, known as “grind outs,” mark where new paving needs to begin. Once the grind out is complete, county road workers move onto the necessary paving and ice abatement treatments.
Since it began last month, a hand-written petition supporting the Navy and its touch-and-go operations at Outlying Field Coupeville has gathered roughly 3,000 signatures, according to organizer Mac McDowell.
Recent pro-Navy efforts, which include a separate online petition and support rallies, are in response to complaints by some Coupeville residents about the noise associated with jet touch-and-go landing practices at OLF.
Though the scope of the Navy’s planned Environmental Impact Statement is still being determined, project managers said the study will be “comprehensive,” responsive to public feedback and will look at more than just jet noise.
The Navy maintains that an Environmental Impact Statement, or EIS, was in the works for some time, but members of a Central Whidbey-based citizen group claim it’s the direct result of a lawsuit they filed against the Navy in July.
The group, Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve, is calling for a complete closure of OLF, claiming that the outlying runway is unsafe.
