The significance of being regarded as one of the top five high school culinary arts programs in the country wasn’t lost on Mary Arthur.
Still, she said that Oak Harbor High School’s culinary team felt some disappointment after finishing in fifth place for the second year in a row after competing at the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, Md., over the weekend.
In the midst of a satisfying finish to the current season, Whidbey Playhouse is hoping to carry that momentum to the coming season.
The Oak Harbor theater offered a sneak peak to the 2013-14 season Saturday night, unveiling a lineup of plays that seemed to appeal to nearly packed audience in the theater.
A little over a year ago, Allenda Jenkins said a few prayers.
Shortly afterward, she met a fellow with a long name and an even longer list of eye-opening theater credentials.
And, it seemed, her prayers were answered.
Steve Stansberry hadn’t heard that one of his favorite lakes on Whidbey Island was getting a bonus planting of large trout this month.
Deer lake near Clinton was scheduled to receive 204 triploids in April in addition to the usual thousands of smaller trout.
“Oh, that’ll be nice,” said Stansberry, a retired educator who lives in Clinton. “That’ll give the grandkids an eye opener if they get a hold of that.”
Racheal Balasa got so busy setting things up, she forgot to set one thing in particular.
Her alarm.
“She overslept,” said Phil Balasa, her dad. “It never went off. I think she forgot to set it.
“It’s usually the case when there’s a very intense moment going on with her, she remembers the details of everything else and will forget the most simple thing.”
When Claire Reed learned that the community pool in Oak Harbor needed a little help sprucing up its grounds, her ears perked up.
Bill Walker, director of the North Whidbey Park & Recreation District, had inquired with Sally Maylor, a friend and member of the Oak Harbor Garden Club, about how to tackle a barren garden bed in the pool’s front parking lot.
Mary Campbell was attending a women’s retreat in the mountains of north central Washington State in February when she heard Kathleen Flenniken read poetry and got an idea.
“I asked her to come and visit us in Oak Harbor, and she agreed,” Campbell said.
Nancy Breeden didn’t tell her sister she was coming to Boston.
Breedan pretended to be a housekeeper, knocking on her sister Vicky King’s hotel room door Sunday morning.
Breeden, from Oak Harbor, took a red-eye flight from Sea-Tac Airport to be present for her sister’s first appearance in the Boston Marathon.
King opened the door of her hotel room and broke into tears.
Rick Schulte admits that the idea of change at this stage of his career doesn’t come without some apprehension.
Yet his desire for a new challenge was strong enough that he told the Oak Harbor School Board he will be stepping down as superintendent of the Oak Harbor School District following the 2013-14 school year.
Recent interest in his leadership from the Richland School District could bring his departure much sooner.
Rick Schulte is ready for a new challenge.
Schulte, superintendent for the Oak Harbor School District for the past 20 years, publicly announced Thursday that he would be stepping down from that position by the end of the 2013-14 school year.
Although his departure could come sooner.
On Wednesday night, Schulte was named one of three finalists for an open superintendent position with the Richland School District.
It’s no surprise to Dale Folkestad that the Whidbey Island Marathon is considered one of the more intriguing places to run a distance race.
The Whidbey Island event, which takes place Sunday, is currently the featured race this month in Running Times at RunnersWorld.com. Men’s Fitness magazine recently referred to the race the “coolest marathon you’ve never heard of.”
Three years ago, Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide book publisher, listed the Whidbey marathon among the top 10 places to run a marathon.
