A wooden carving of an eagle came to life in front of motorists driving Saturday on State Highway 20 through Oak Harbor.

“Buzzsaw” Bob Halverson, a Whidbey-based woodcarver, fired up his chainsaw to carve an eagle from a piece of red cedar.

He worked underneath a tent located at the edge of the parking lot at Skagit Farmers Supply in Oak Harbor, within view of motorists, pedestrians and shoppers at the store.

Halverson is famous in chainsaw carving circles. His work was featured on ABC’s TV show The View.

Saturday, he brought several of his carvings with him Saturday to show people his work. Those carvings included several versions of Sasquatch, a larger eagle and an owl resting in a tree.

Halverson has used a chainsaw to carve wood for 23 years. Even so, he said he is still learning his craft.

“You never get as good as you think you want to be,” Halverson said between cuts. “It’s been 23 years and I have a great passion.”

In addition to his animal sculptures, he also carves family portraits out of chunks of wood.

“People can sit down and I can whip it up in about 45 minute,” he said.

He also carves art from toppled trees and stumps that are still standing in front of a customers home.

“It’s a great way to bring life to it,” Halverson said.

Halverson’s visit to the store’s parking lot was a way to get a bit more exposure while attracting people to the business who may not have thought to stop by, said Dave Greenwood, fencing specialist at Skagit Farmers Supply.

Greenwodd pointed out that the supply store sells more than feed.

Skagit Farmers Supply sells everything from clothes to horse tack to gasoline, he said, adding chicks are now available for sale.
