Register by Monday to participate in the Monte Cristo Backpack hiking adventure with Crescent Harbor Adventures on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Seaplane Base.

The hike is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 5 and will take participants to Monte Cristo, the site of an abandoned mining town that once was home to more than 2,000 people, but was mostly abandoned by the 1920s.

Organizers say this is a good beginner backpacking opportunity. The hike in follows an old road to the town site, and participants will camp at a nearby campground, making it easy to explore other trails in the area.

Cost is $58 per person and includes guide, transportation and group camping gear. Meals, clothing and gear will be discussed at a pre-trip meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at Crescent Harbor Adventures.

Those interested may call 257-4842 or go to www.navylifepnw.com for information.
