The Senate unanimously adopted SR 8614, Navy Appreciation Day, sponsored by Sen. Barbara Bailey, a tireless advocate for veterans and military issues in the state. The resolution recognizes the many contributions of the United States Navy to our state’s communities, economy and safety. Bailey was joined by members of the Navy on the Senate floor as members spoke at length about their experiences with the navy in their districts and communities.
“The Navy has a deep history in Washington, and service members contribute so much to our communities and state,” Bailey said. “I am honored to sponsor this resolution that recognizes those contributions and reflects on the history and personal stories of naval members that live and work to keep our state and nation safe.”
This Navy Day was also a historic first as Bailey awarded the Air Medal to service members stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey for their heroic search and rescue efforts on Mount. Stewart in 2014. Receiving the award were Lt. Jared J. Wada, Lt. Christopher C. Heller, Hospital Corpsman First Class Wayne N. Papalski and Naval Aircrewman Second Class Cory R. Hedges.
“The award these Navy servicemen received is an example of the kind of dedication they have to the community,” Bailey said. “In a situation where no one else could help, the Navy stepped up and put their resources to use to save civilian lives. It is these kinds of situations that give resolutions like Navy Day so much meaning.”
