Editor,

Why isn’t the presidential election decided by popular vote instead of the current electoral college system? The “swing” states get all the attention.

Do you think a Republican candidate gives a rip about the West Coast liberal states? The “swing” states would logically get more attention by a sitting president of either party when seeking a second term.

If you are a conservative voter in a liberal state, you might not even vote in the current electoral college system.

What’s the point? Your vote would be disregarded anyhow.

Yet, with a popular vote system, there would still be an incentive to casting your vote.

Popular vote would represent all people. The electoral college allows candidates to manipulate the system, and it promotes favoritism.

Time for a change. But those in power like it the way it is.

That’s one of several weaknesses in our democracy.

Excessive campaign spending is another.
