Editor,
It is incredible that the Board of Island County Commissioners is considering accepting the 66-page “offer” of the Montgomerys in the case of Wonn Road’s public access.
This is so obviously a bad idea. Capitulating to the bullying of the Montgomerys is reminiscent of Neville Chamberlain’s capitulation to Hitler in swapping Czechoslovakia for peace in Europe prior to World War II.
That seemed a good trade at the time as well, except to the Czechs. But as we learned, some folks are not to be trusted. Beyond its obvious illegality, it would be completely unethical to allow bullying to rule the day simply because it is convenient.
Commissioner Helen Price Johnson is quite right in pointing out that this would send a very disturbing message and would establish a precedent which we would undoubtedly be challenged in court.
As the editorial in the Whidbey News-Times stated, “And it seems like a big win for the ‘1 percenters’ who get their way by throwing their money around.”
Let’s keep to the high ground and just say no to the Montgomery’s “offer.”
