At about noon on June 9, my wife entered the Navy Exchange for some quick shopping while I was waiting out in the vehicle.

I turned on the ignition so I could lower the vehicle window.

Soon, my wife returned and we were ready to go.

Except the engine would not start. I had not turned off the ignition after I opened the windows, and that had drained the battery.

As I was trying to figure out how to solve our problem, my wife walked over to the service station to see if they could provide some assistance.

As she was telling her troubles to the clerk, another customer asked where we were parked. My wife told him, and the complete stranger said, “Come on.”

They got in his vehicle and were soon parked next to our dead vehicle.

With his jumper cables, he soon had our engine running and ready to go.

My wife offered to pay the stranger, but he said, “No, thanks. Give it to Navy Relief,” and off he went.

As he pulled away, I thought back to those old Western movies of the Lone Ranger.

“Who was that non-masked stranger?”

Thank you very much. It is nice to know there are people around willing to provide a helping hand to those in need.
