Here’s a toast to the annual sermon on the benefits of Puget Sound swimming, which I read while my Lab splashed blissfully in the waters off Whidbey Island (Editor’s column, June 3). Having originated from the sunshine state myself, I understand the dark price one must pay for a swim in “comfortable” Florida waters: packed beaches, cigarette butts, panoramic views of butts of a different kind squeezed into bathing suits the size of Kleenex.
He beaches around Whidbey, meanwhile, though chilly, offer everything from tidepools to mountain scenery to the secret thrill of pretending to be a polar bear, and you (usually) don’t have to spar with sunburned men in Speedos for a spot to jump in.
Though I have only lived here a year, I am still a water baby and a water baby I will remain. Thanks to the article on promoting Puget Sound swimming, I just may have received the extra push I need to take the plunge. What do I have to lose, except some circulation? Let’s spread the word. If a Labrador can do it, why can’t we?
