Letter: Flag etiquette shouldn’t waiver due to politics

Editor,

Most people who have served in the military, and many other patriots, are knowledgeable about flag etiquette. We all know that it is bad etiquette and unpatriotic to fly a ragged U.S. flag.

Those who fly an American flag on the back of a vehicle need to either: (1) drive slowly, or (2) take the flag down while driving at highway speeds, or (3) plan frequent replacements with a new flag.

Those who go ahead and fly a ragged American flag are resented and considered unpatriotic.

Another long-standing patriotic American tradition is that flags are flown at half-staff for 30 days at the passing of a current or former U.S. president. Flags are currently at half staff to honor former President Carter. U.S. News reports that the president-elect has objected to flags flying at half-staff during his inauguration. If I outlive him, I plan to remember his objection to flying half-staff flags, and keep mine at full staff after his passing.
