Letter: I-2117 failure shows concern for climate

Editor,

I want to express my gratitude to the 62% of Washington voters who overwhelmingly voted to support the Climate Commitment Act. Initiative 2117 would have repealed the CCA, ending funding needed to reduce carbon pollution, restore and update our infrastructure, and shift our economy toward the future. The large margin of support for the Climate Commitment Act shows that climate change is a concern that crosses over political lines.

Surveys consistently show that 70% of Americans accept climate change and science supporting it’s cause. Many of us recognize that we are standing on the edge of more than one tipping point, beyond which we, as humans, will have no ability to change or control. As individuals we feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the problem. Leadership makes all the difference.

Our bold step forward will act as a model for other states to follow. I am very grateful for Governor Inslee’s determined leadership on climate, and proud of our willingness to change our course in a big way, right now, not later.
