Letter: Remember all we have in common

Editor,

Thank you for publishing both sides of the political spectrum on your opinion page. It is clear people feel strongly about their views. It’s easy to get swept up in the media coverage, no matter where you get your news. Donald Trump is exceptional at creating sensational news.

Whether you support him or not, it is important to remember that, in this Other Washington, we are neighbors. We have common ground and we should keep that in mind. We all want healthy families, clean water, parks and beaches. We all want good care for our seniors, disabled and children. We all want opportunities for young people, in education and in the workforce.

Here on Whidbey Island, I appreciate the diversity in our communities. I appreciate the support of our many non-profits and government agencies who offer assistance when we need it. And don’t we all need assistance at one time or another? We have thousands of volunteers who work in every aspect of our community and give countless hours of time and energy. I’m proud to be one of them. I’m happy to live here on Whidbey and reach out to those that may not share my views, but are willing to share a smile and work with me to make this island such a wonderful place to live.
