Editor,
WSDOT should consider hydrogen fuel cell ferries rather than hybrid electric if the state really wants to achieve truly pollution-free benefits from the ferry system, be more cost-effective in the long-term and set the standard for the future. Presently, San Francisco has launched the MV Sea Change (sanfranciscobayferry.com), a zero-emission commercial hydrogen fuel cell ferry traveling the San Francisco Bay.
Also, Island County has ordered 14 hydrogen fuel cell buses. So rather than building expensive electric shore charging units and electricity from polluting and environmentally affecting sources, Washington state should leap into the future with hydrogen and ammonia fuel cell technology. And the state legislature should reconsider their hybrid proposal and funding for such.
