As a city resident, I am looking forward to supporting Jim Slowik for mayor in November. I have known Mayor Slowik for 20 years and appreciate all that he has done for this community. I had the privilege of working with him on the Oak Harbor School Board in the late ‘90s and always found him eager to work together to get things done and many positive accomplishments were brought forward during that time.

I know that he has been active with the Rotary Club in helping with many community projects. He was especially helpful in a leadership role with the Wildcat stadium project, which is a point of pride to this community. He has also personally supported many nonprofit organizations in Oak Harbor.

As mayor, he has moved along many projects that I have seen studied to death over the years. The Freund Trail and trailhead project, the boardwalk project between Windjammer Park and Flintstone Park, the Maylor Point trail access project, the downtown renovation project and finally addressing the stormwater flooding at Highway 20/Pioneer Way are just some examples of projects moved along in the past few years that have languished with consultants and committees for years and years.

Besides personally running several successful businesses, he helped bring Waste Management to Oak Harbor and finally moved along the Goldie Road annexation, providing much-needed jobs and revenue to the city. The wastewater treatment plant project, which is now starting to move along, is yet another example of the projects that have sat on drawing boards for years.

I have grown to love Oak Harbor and its people, having come here with the Marine Corps in 1978, and am gratified to see the accomplishments that Mayor Slowik and the city council have brought to us, and look forward to the continued progress yet to come.
