Editor,
Outlying Field Coupeville isn’t the only possible site Whidbey Island Naval Air Station could use for its practice landings.
Years ago in a meeting with representatives from the Navy, a resident of Central Whidbey made a suggestion that an Outlying Field could be sited somewhere west of Port Angeles along the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
That’s just a few minutes flight time from NAS Whidbey in an area that is sparsely populated and most of the land is used for tree farms.
I think this was an excellent suggestion, and it can still be a win-win solution. Forest land is relatively cheap, and NAS Whidbey stays put.
A new practice field could also be used to reduce the noise around NAS Whidbey itself.
This should be an opportunity to give everybody on Whidbey Island an improved quality of life.
