Bravo Zulu for the new DUI prevention program developed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station as mentioned in the July 13 issue of the Whidbey News-Times, “White Jersey Program aims to curb Navy DUIs.”

Such an innovative aviation approach at a naval air station should prove to be a great way to connect with personnel to help prevent DUIs.

Other ways include the presentations provided on base by the Impaired Driving Impact Panel of Island County.

Since last October more than 3,000 military personnel experienced IDIPIC panels in six presentations reserved by commands, which we hope has contributed to the lower number of active-duty DUIs being reported this year.

The DUI-(Free) Day reward program is another positive approach we’re pleased to see implemented as well. Since the fiscal crisis has curtailed the Navy’s funding in various ways, including IDIPIC prevention panels, others have fortunately stepped in to help take care of the Navy’s own.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank two groups that helped cover the costs of bringing our safety training to NASWI in May and July: Oak Harbor Navy League and the Officers’s Spouses’ Club of Whidbey Island.

They are two of many Partners in Prevention helping IDIPIC in its mission to deter driving under the influence and underage drinking in our communities.

Also a very big thank you to Island Thrift for matching all donations IDIPIC raises during our KISS safety campaign — Keep It a Safe Summer — during the 100 Deadly Days of Summer, Memorial Day to Labor Day. IDIPIC has already raised $4,400 thanks to so many caring businesses, organizations and individuals.
