Our pool is the best

Whidbey is the largest island in the continental U.S. We are surrounded by water and have a large Navy base. Some personnel need to meet or adjust to naval requirements. John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool has instructors to teach needy personnel and civilians also. Special classes are designed for problems such as arthritis, for non-swimmers and just plain walkers. It is common for physicians to send their patients there.

Over the last 22 years, I have seen many improvements to an already great pool. I’ve been to many pools in diverse places and Oak Harbor’s is the best. Craig Carlson is in charge now and helped by Harvey Prosser and Tom Johnson to keep it up to date. This pool caters to special needs with great instructors.

In World War II I was in the U.S. Coast Guard as a SPAR, the women’s branch. I have been a water safety and handicapped instructor in Spokane at the YWCA. We did have warmish water there for handicapped and special classes. Yes, I’m 83 and in good shape because of the pool. It’s the best (not fanciest) I have seen in all my travels.

I’ve had six major knee surgeries and two arthroscopes, and I walk better than most people my age. Here there are special flotation devices to help people enjoy the freedom of water, even in the deep end. Give it a try, I’ll even help you!
