Whidbey Island voters have a unique opportunity this fall to select an extremely qualified candidate to be Island County commissioner, while insuring that all Island County communities will have a strong and open voice in County decision-making.
Mac McDowell and Phil Bakke will tell you they have done a great job of keeping taxes lower, but when you look at your utility bill in Oak Harbor, you know differently. The tight knit group of leaders, who want to annex for development, are bankers who sell property and real estate agents who stand to gain financially or are somehow tied to the above.
Our Constitution guarantees that every person charged with a crime will have legal representation. The job of this legal representative (defense attorney) is to speak for the defendant and represent his/her interests in court. This means, even if we are guilty we still get someone to stand with us in a court of law to ensure that our rights are protected. It is the job of the jury to decide guilt.
The controversy over the accident potential zone in Dugualla Bay carries with it some concerns that I believe should be brought to the public’s attention. How did this emergent change in the zoning come about? What benefit does it provide and to whom? Why is this APZ treated different from the Boyer property? All good questions, and in some cases, can only be speculated on at this time.
Residents on Whidbey have received recently the voter’s pamphlet, which is a great cue that the political peak season is coming our way. As Whidbey citizens continue to submit applications to WISH and the office hears the stories of homelessness daily, the reality for affordable housing options on our island remains a growing concern.
In this election, we have three choices for Representative Position 2.

Island County voters have an interesting choice in voting for Superior Court Judge on their August 19 primary ballot: Judge Vickie Churchill, who has served with distinction for 12 years, versus a man who has spent much of his career as a defense attorney trying to help the guilty go free.
I just wanted to say thank you to all the wonderful people of Oak Harbor who have written letters and cards and sent packages to me while I have been stationed here in Iraq. Your words of encouragement and well wishing have been a great help in my recovery from surgery, and for that I thank you.
Stop the name calling of those who disagree with you, they have the same right of opinion as you do.
I’m writing to express how thrilled I am to find a little business right here in Oak Harbor where the customer is valued as a customer and old fashioned values and integrity exist. After experiencing frustration with the impersonality and lack of useful help in Home Depot where we’d purchased our cabinets for a kitchen remodel, we turned to the locals and found ourselves in Bob’s Cabinet Creations downtown on Pioneer to buy some hardware for the cabinets. Was I ever in for a treat!
I would like to use this public forum to state that I can not vote in favor of the Coupeville Library expansion in its present proposed form. Property owners being on the hook for 20 years for a building they will not have ownership in, I have a problem with. I believe without ownership you have no control.
My gratitude to the two bicyclists that assisted in getting me to the hospital on Monday morning, July 21, after I received a severe dog bite on Hastie Lake Road that resulted in a lack of mobility on my part.
