I’ve been shopping at NAS Whidbey Island commissary for the past 28 years and have always been treated with great care, politeness and thoughtfulness.
In response to Steve Peck’s letter in the Sept. 3 paper. I am appalled that you can say the baggers at the commissary lack service skills. Have you ever engaged them in conversation by asking how their day is going? They work through every kind of weather and make sure our eggs or other delicate purchases don’t get broken. Have you ever noticed how they pack your vehicle? They make sure that everything is in place so the frozen items stay together to stay frozen on the way home. Having been born and raised in the military life, gone active duty and married to a Navy man for 25 years, I have always shopped at the commissary. The baggers work for tips only so the prices of our groceries can be kept so low.
We, the North Whidbey Lions Club, would like to extend our appreciation to the city of Oak Harbor for supporting our 23rd Annual Car Show that was held Aug. 9, 2008 in Windjammer Park.
There’s a name for efforts by big corporations to manipulate public opinion by creating fake “grassroots” citizens’ organizations. It’s called Astroturfing, and now we have our very own example, the “Whidbey Consumers for Affordable Energy.” Would it shock you to learn that this group has no known “Whidbey consumers” as members, and is financed entirely by puget Sound Energy? Perhaps you’ve seen the hundreds of red “Pull the Plug” signs they’ve blanketed the island with (which, according to the county, will have to be removed at taxpayer expense).
I read with surprise and dismay the letter to the editor from Mr. Steve Peck. Not only was it rude, but in the wrong venue! It should have been in the Northwest Navigator and not in a civilian paper.
I think a letter in favor of Barbara Bailey is in order. Now, I don’t agree with everything she does, but I do agree with her stand on expanding government.
I am appalled by the recent stories of the young youth leader at Living Faith Christian Center. It sickens me to read about how concerned everyone is about the young man. Did we forget about his victims, who were children, some as young as three years old?
We wanted to write and thank your reporter Liz Burlingame, the Marines of MATSG-53, NAS Whidbey, the Gold Star Mothers of Washington, the Oak Harbor VFW, the Washington Marine Corps Leagues and all the sponsors for their support and participation in the Aug. 23 running of the Major Megan McClung Memorial Run.
Steve Peck (Letters, Sept. 3) would have us believe that there are no options when shopping at our local commissary. He would also have us believe that the sheer volume of shoppers on any given day at the commissary compares to our civilian counterparts. In contrast Steve, the civilian stores only hire a few customer service representatives to handle their customers’ needs. Whereas the commissary has over 70 baggers (military family members) to assist their patrons as demand dictates.
The disparaging 14-by-8 inch attack ad against Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen in the Sept. 3 issue of the Whidbey News-Times was paid for by the so-called Leadership Council in Olympia.
The Whidbey News-Times reported Aug. 2 that “North Whidbey’s only all-instrumental music store, ClickMusic.biz opened last month to serve islanders and the city of Anacortes.” Perhaps the reporter should have done her homework before submitting this article.
On behalf of all of us at Island Transit, I would like say thank you to our Camano Island – Everett Connector commuters, and to tell you how completely overwhelmed we were by their generosity, kindness and sincerity in providing such a phenomenal surprise celebration on Sunday, Aug. 10, in appreciation of our Island Transit Camano employees and the Route 412 Camano Island – Everett Connector transit service.
