Yes, Linda (Letters, June 11), the Class of 2008 did indeed demonstrate ingenuity and teamwork but not restraint in pranking the library facility. While no physical damage was done the restoration cost to all of us Coupeville taxpayers does place this “prank” in the destructive category. The books will not be magically restored to their proper positions without paid adult supervision. For the punishment to truly fit the act the students involved should be accountable for undoing the havoc caused.
I know why I love this community and I work so hard to help, North Whidbey residents did it again! You surpassed the Atlanta headquarters of the American Cancer Society’s goals for number of participants in the Cancer Prevention Study-3.
Just a note to let everyone know that the flags that are displayed throughout Oak Harbor during holidays and special events are not a function of the city, but that of the Oak Harbor Lion’s Club.
The club asks for a donation of $25 per flag for the year, generally one event each month. At present, there are 270 donators and 323 flags displayed each event.
Island County is a wonderful place to live. I want it to stay this way. We have an opportunity to elect a very qualified person to serve us as a county commissioner who will work to maintain and improve the quality of life here. This candidate is Helen Price Johnson.
In all the hub-a-baloo over the legality of Mary Margaret Haugen’s district office in Oak Harbor? I think some folks missed the point. The point simply is, why now?
Mary Margaret has been in office nearly 26 years. I asked around and as far as I can tell she has never once had a district office. Never once received permission for an additional staff person.
I’d like to thank our School Board for rejecting Core-Plus as the proposed new high school math curriculum. Core-Plus is one of several “constructivist” math curricula in existence. Two other math curricula which share this distinction are already in use by the school district, both adopted in 2001.
Cap and trade is the easy way of saying “we did something!” Frankly it doesn’t cut it. We need uniformly intensive incentives to be applied nationally. We need a suitably stringent requirement on all utilities in America if they want to continue in business in this country.
The senior prank is one of several unofficial traditions at Coupeville High. The Class of 2008 demonstrated some laudable ingenuity, teamwork and restraint in pranking at the new facility without physical harm or damage (Whidbey News-Times, June 4).
I read the letter to editor concerning the paving projects in Burlington and south of Oak Harbor and the article which came out right after that explaining the reason why paving was delayed, concerning nesting bald eagles near the road project south Of Oak Harbor.
Give us a brake. Please. The next time you’re driving one of our island’s beautiful country roads and come upon a cyclist using part of your lane, resist the temptation to veer slightly to the left and roar past them. I know you’re an expert behind the wheel, and a miss is as good as a mile, but trust me, my heart rate is already high enough. I don’t need the extra burst of adrenalin that comes when your SUV flies past at 40 or 50 miles an hour, inches from my leg.
The day before yesterday I drove past the Safeway gas station and the price for regular was $3.99. Yesterday morning the price had gone up to $4.06, and by evening it was $4.13. Today it’s higher!
What happened to stores purchasing their stock and charging a fair profit?
I have read with interest and sometimes amusement, the recent letters to the editor. The Island County Republican Party is outraged that our Sen. Haugen opened an office in Oak Harbor. I must admit this is losing its amusement; hypocrites wear on me after a time.
I was reading a good letter in the May 28 edition of the Whidbey News-Times entitled, “Bring them home safely,” when I came upon the words “real or pretended war.” Surely this is not speaking of World War I or World War II, everyone concludes they were real, don’t they? It wouldn’t have been the Korean War where we liberated South Korea, now one of the most successful nations in the world. We might also have liberated North Korea. Our soldiers had almost secured Pyongyang, before being called to return south, being hamstrung by the United Nations. Was it the Vietnam War, was that pretend? At least, I believe, they thwarted the advance of communism in the world.
